Volunteer Chaplain Preaching To Inmates At The Oklahoma County Jail For 20 Years

For the past 20 years Orrie Flynt has been visiting the Oklahoma County Detention Center spreading joy and Jesus. 

He’s 84 years old and a faithful volunteer chaplain at the jail. 

“I’m here normally all day on Monday and all day on Friday, looking for people to tell about Jesus,” said Flynt. 

It all started when his wife saw an article in the newspaper about the need for chaplains at the jail. 

“I went home and I told the wife, ‘Honey we’re going to go to work as volunteer chaplains.’ She said, ‘Who me? Oh no!’ I said, ‘Yes we are,’” said Flynt.

Twenty years later Flynt and his wife have been faithfully serving at the jail. A job he loves and doesn’t take lightly. 

“I started listing the names and the dates of everybody that I lead to the Lord. The first page was dated 2008,” said Flynt. 

Flynt’s impact at the jail is unmeasurable and affects inmates even when they get out. 

I’ve seen people through the years that will ask about him and they remember hey, he helped me when I was locked up,” said Jorge Vara, chaplain at the Oklahoma County jail. 

And even with all the lives he’s touched Mr. Flynt doesn’t want any credit. 

“I’m embarrassed because I’m not a braggart. In fact, I wish you wouldn’t take a picture of this,” said Flynt. 

Flynt is reaching people at their lowest place and sharing a message of hope. 

“While you’re alive there’s still hope. And Orrie brings hope pointing people to the Lord,” said Vara. 

There is a passion and sincerity to what Flynt is doing and as much as he loves it, he is quick to point out, this work isn’t for everyone.
