Skiatook Paws and Claws Animal Rescue says it can't take in any more dogs or cats because of increased vet bills.
The animal rescue says it's been treating dogs and cats in bad shape and nursing them back to good health.
But it's come at a cost.
The rescue owes almost $60,000 in vet bills.
The non-profit's President, Paige Bodden, says it's gotten to the point where the rescue has stopped accepting new animals.
"I would say right now we are as overwhelmed as you can get," Bodden said. "Dog rescue, in general, is overwhelming because it's constant. It's never-ending. There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel in general."
Bodden says between vaccinating, spading, and neutering, the vet bills have been stacking up.
She says they are trying to do as many adoption events as they can.
Kellie Morton also works for the rescue and says adoption events are vital in getting some of that money back.
"We only get a small portion of what we put into the dog back through our adoption fee," Morton said.
Since Paws and Claws is a non-profit, it relies on donations from the community.
Bodden says the intake freeze won't allow them to help other dogs out there that are in need.
She says there are currently hundreds of dogs on the waiting list.
But Bodden says other rescues are struggling too.
"I don't know any dog or cat rescue in Oklahoma that stays at a comfortable level," Bodden said.
Bodden says if it wasn't for the support of the community, the rescue would be in a much bigger hole.
"In general, we have an amazing support system and following," Bodden said. "We appreciate each and every one of our supporters and followers."
