Sunshine returns today with afternoon highs reaching the mid to upper 50s. Another robust warming trend is likely through the end of the week with only a minor reduction in temperature for Christmas Day. Gusty southwest winds will develop Thursday and Friday increasing the fire spread rates across the state. Dense fog advisories will remain for the early morning hours across part of southern Oklahoma.
The upper-level low across north Texas yesterday has now exited most of our region. Clouds cleared from the northwest to southeast overnight. Light wind and clear sky promoted some patchy fog, dense in a few locations across southeastern for the next few hours. Unfortunately, some locations near these areas of fog will be near or slightly below freezing through 8 a.m. While this is not a widespread issue, some patchy freezing fog (fog that freezes on contact with elevated surfaces) will be possible for the early morning commute in these dense fog areas. This can create slick spots on bridges and other elevated surfaces. Remain aware if you encounter patches of fog. A dense fog advisory will be in effect for southeastern OK until 8 a.m. this morning.
Later today, we expect mostly sunny sky, light south winds for most of the day and highs reaching the mid to upper 50s. A weak wind shift occurs later this evening but with no major impacts. A few additional areas of patchy fog may occur overnight into Wednesday morning. A general warming trend will continue daily until we reach the mid to upper 70s Christmas Eve afternoon before the next front arrives by early Friday evening. This is not a major system, but temps should drop a few degrees, back into the upper 50s or lower 60s Saturday before warming back into the 70s Sunday into early next week. The pattern will bring several systems near the state next week as low-level moisture increases across the plains bringing thunderstorm chances back near or east of the region by at least Tuesday of next week. We’ll continue with only low chances near and east of the area Tuesday for this forecast update.
Thanks for reading the Tuesday morning weather discussion and blog.
Have a super great day!
