London Zoo started its annual stock-take on Tuesday, with zookeepers counting animals big and small, from lions and tigers to colonies of ants.

New arrivals to the zoo in the past year included Asiatic lioness Arya, and three snappy big-headed turtles which hatched in the reptile house.

Sumatran tiger Gaysha gave birth to a cub just before Christmas, bringing the tiger tally to three, the zoo said.

Three baby Eastern black and white colobus monkeys also joined this year's count after being born at the zoo in the summer.
