University police and leaders said even one sexual assault case is one too many, and that the more they can continue to spread awareness, the more these cases can be prevented.
According to campus data in 2021, there were 62 cases reported.
According to OSUPD, there have already been four reported sexual assault cases in the month of January.
OSU released a statement saying in part, "At OSU, we are taking steps to make a positive difference. We strive to make an environment where students feel empowered to report an incident (and) understand the importance of reporting and to educate all members of the Cowboy family about the issue of consent."
The school went on to say, "When we enhance education and awareness, it is possible to see an increase in reporting. It doesn't necessarily mean that more incidents are occurring, but more people feel empowered and aware to report."
There are resources available for victims and programs for students wanting to learn more about consent.
OSU is providing Victim Advocate Services along with requiring all incoming students to complete online training on sexual violence prevention.
There are also student advocacy groups that host monthly educational programs for students about sexual violence, which can also be accessed on the school website.
The university is urging students to reach out to OSU PD if they or someone they know is a victim.
