Memorial High School broke ground on a new garden in memory of a student who was murdered ten years ago.

Kayla Ferrante wanted to make a career out of working with special needs children.

Kayla was shot and killed the day after her graduation by Edwin Daniels, who mistakenly thought he was shooting at a rival gang member.

Kayla's mother said "Kayla's Friendship Garden" will give students hands-on experience with gardening and working as a team.

"To come together, get to know them, bond with them, find they have a common ground, to work the soil together, see that grow, learn some life skills," said Roxanne Thornton, Kayla's mother.

Today, March 8 would have been Kayla's 27th birthday.
