Sand Springs is becoming one of the best teams in 6A. The team has just four loses overall and is hoping to make it to play for a state title for the first time in school history next month. Senior leadership and having a solid offense can help you win ball games.
Sand Springs doesn't have to look too far for a leader this season. Shortstop Keaton Campbell is hitting nearly 400 and leading the team in runs. Head Coach Matt Brown credits a lot of the team’s success to his senior.
“He gets out there and competes and the guys feed off of him. When he is going well, we are going well -- and he has been going well a lot this year," said Sand Springs Head Baseball Coach Matt Brown.
The Sandites are clicking at the right time on the diamond, having sweeps over the reigning 6A state champs; Jenks and Broken Arrow. Coach Brown believes it comes down to one thing -- his 11 seniors.
"The doubt factor is gone, the fear factor is gone, they have a lot of experience and when you get that together that’s a good combination. It’s all them -- they are playing freaking awesome and it’s been for me to watch them play this year,” said Brown.
"We are all older and we hang out all the time. It’s more of a chemistry bond and then as a plus, we come out here and play baseball for fun," said Sand Springs shortstop Keaton Campbell.
On Friday against Glenpool, Campbell finished one for four and added two more runs to his resume, keeping pace to host a regional for the first time since 2011.
