It is the first day of school for students and teachers in Sand Springs on Monday morning.
Sand Springs updated its COVID-19 plan over the summer, outlining recommendations for anyone who may be feeling sick. The district says teachers and other staff will frequently disinfect buildings and classrooms. The district is using Google classroom and will pivot to distance learning if a closure is necessary.
The district says it is in good shape when it comes to staffing to start this new school year. They've filled just about every certified position and have few support staff openings.
"Special education teachers are a rare jewel nowadays but honestly that's the only one. We opened up a new position at our early childhood education center yesterday because of enrollment increases which is great for us. Don't get me wrong, there's a teacher shortage it's definitely problematic but knock on some wood we are doing really well in Sand Springs," said Sand Springs Superintended Sherry Durkee.
The district is also using an app called "STOP-it" where students can anonymously report threats of violence, bullying or any other safety concerns.
