The Tulsa Air and Space Museum has a new, temporary exhibit honoring the stories of the Tuskegee Airmen and Women's Airforce Service Pilots.
The displays and 360-degree video trailer which are part of the Rise Above exhibit help keep alive the memories of the men and women who served with them during the second world war. Museum Curator Alex London says the two exhibits tell the often-untold stories of the Tuskegee Airmen and Women's Airforce Service Pilots.
"It’s a really unique semi-interactive experience, to get an idea of that history. And combined with the P-51 here, you’ll be able to go see and kind of really smell and touch that living history that you just saw in those videos," he said.
“We’re highlighting some specific Oklahomans. Individuals like Yancy Williams who had a huge part in that legacy themselves."
The famous red-tails and Tuskegee Airmen pilots flew P-51s. In celebration of the newly launched Tuskegee Legacy exhibit, the owner of a P-51 plane has put it in the museum for display through Saturday.
"It’s a great piece of living history. It’s something that you don’t get to see very often. So we wanted to bring that history that we talked about in the exhibit to life here in the museum," he said.
The rise above exhibit will be at the museum through Saturday, but the new Tuskegee Airmen exhibit will stay long-term.
