A time capsule created by the Sand Springs Class of 1988 was discovered this week while remodeling the school.
The plan is to get the class together to go through the contents. Sand Springs Public Schools superintendent Sherry Durkee said the capsule was made up of a cardboard box. It was dug up during construction at the old 9th Grade Center, which is being converted into the district’s administrative building.
Stairs that led down to the time capsule had been covered during previous construction.
Ivan White, a member of the class of 1988 who still lives in Sand Springs, says the capsule was supposed to be dug up during the 20-year reunion.
“I think it was just forgotten about,” said White. “I remember it every once in a while but I never thought to find anybody to tell where it’s at.”
Durkee said she called White and another member of the class of 1988 when it was discovered this week.
“I didn’t touch it because it’s not mine, but I do have it in my car so I’m the keeper of the box until they get a game plan for how they’re going to open it.”
The box has lots of damage from being buried for so long. Organizers involved with reunions for the class of 1988 are planning to get everyone involved to go through the box.
