With temperatures dropping and chances for snow in the forecast, a group of Tulsa women is trying to do Something Good for the homeless.
The colder temperatures have many people in Green Country looking forward to snuggling up in their homes to stay warm. But for the homeless, that’s not an option, so the Women's Group at University Village Retirement Community is making blankets to help.
Terri Johnson has been a member of the women's group for the last couple of years and she says they're always thinking of ways to help those in need within the community.
"We made ten blankets, they're double fleece, so they are very, very warm," Johnson said.
The National Health Care for the Homeless Council says 700 people experiencing homelessness die each year from hypothermia across the country.
Robyn Fletcher works at University Village and says it was a sight to see the ladies were sewing, cutting, and creating ten warm blankets.
She says while some residents donated their time, others donated their money or blankets they bought to help out with the cause.
"They like to reach out to the community and so they were thinking about the unsheltered folks here in Tulsa and how cold it's going to be and decided to make them blankets," Fletcher said.
The ladies tell me the blankets are now going straight to people who need them. A gift of kindness to help keep them warm as winter approaches.
"We've got a roof over our head, we go heat, we got blankets, we have everything we need. So, it's nice to be able to think about the people in the community who aren't as lucky or fortunate as we are and just help them out," Fletcher said.
The women are also collecting hats, scarves, and gloves to donate to the homeless as well.
