More than a dozen people are without a place to stay after an apartment fire broke out on Thursday morning.
Firefighters say they were called to the scene at the Melrose Apartments near East 11th Street and South Sheridan Road at around 1:30 a.m.
According to TFD District Fire Chief Nate Morgans, the original call was about a grease fire, but when crews arrived on scene, they say the blaze was much larger than a normal grease fire. Fire officials say crews on scene could see heavy flames and smoke coming from the roof of the complex.
According to the District Chief, one firefighter was injured while working the scene and is expected to make a full recovery.
Crews on the scene eventually called for more help to fight the fire.
"We started running out of resources and that's how we manage these incidents, We never want to have just enough. We want to have some stuff left over in our pockets. And it's cold outside. We had a lot of displaced citizens when we pulled up, so we knew we were going to need them," said Chief Morgans.
Over a dozen residents were displaced as a result of the early-morning blaze. Those impacted are now receiving help from the Red Cross while they work to find somewhere permanent to stay.
Currently, it is unclear what started the fire.
