When the tornadoes came through Seminole last May, it caused severe structural damage throughout the town, but for the Stillwells it was the emotional damage that they are still dealing with today.

“A pole fell on top of the house, and we had the insurance company come out,” said Seminole resident, Ernest Stillwell.

That was the beginning of the problems for the Seminole couple.

“We’ve had trouble getting people to even come out here, and I have to tell them, I have insurance,” said Toni Stillwell.

Most roofing companies would not even come out to assess the damage, but when companies did come out, they discovered there was a problem with the Stillwell’s insurance policy.

“Not enough to cover nothing. You know, not even enough to cover the people coming down here to look at the roof,” said Mr. Stillwell.

With no companies interested in doing the job, and not enough insurance money to pay for the roof, the Stillwells have suffered under a leaking roof for close to a year.

“We were wondering how we were going to get it done. Insurance company wasn’t going to nobody nothing, and we had to get it done,” said Mr. Stillwell.

Then, while watching News 9, Mr. Stillwell got divine intervention through a commercial.

“We were looking for somebody that would do almost anything, and it said, ‘well I’ll do that,’ so I said yeah, he’ll do it,” said Mr. Stillwell.

Then there was a bigger surprise.

“That looks like the man on the TV. I said ‘he’s outside,’” said Mr. Stillwell.

“I show up and I get the biggest smile whenever he opens the door, that I’m the actual guy that’s showing up, because I was on the TV commercial,” said Erick Brown, owner of McCann’s Roofing.

After spending some time with the Stillwells and hearing their story, the solution was a no-brainer.

“Some way, somehow, it has to get put on, and my lovely wife said ‘why don’t we just do it,’” said Brown.

So today, the eight-thousand-dollar job was done at no cost to the Stillwells.

“There’s a saying, to make kindness loud, and that’s what we want to be about,” said Brown.

The sound of the hammering means one thing to the homeowners.

“Work is getting done. We’re going to sleep good tonight. I wish it would rain,” said Mr. Stillwell.

The Browns say this is the first time they have done someone’s roof for free, but it won’t be the last.
