Tulsa Young Professionals, also known as ‘TYPROS,’ is working to get more people interested in the legislative process through it’s 'Day at the Capitol' event. The group plans to partner with young professional groups across the state from Lawton, Edmond and Oklahoma City.

Executive Director David Tollette says the goal of TYPROS is to create leaders who can lead policy changes at a local, state, and federal level.

While at the state capitol, participants will learn how to communicate ideas with legislators and speak with them and about issues impacting Oklahomans.

The day also includes a tour of the capitol, observing committee meetings, and panel discussions.

A major goal of the initiative is to see more young people getting out to vote.

“We're just trying to provide people the information they need so they can feel comfortable going to the polls or reaching out to their civic leaders or the civic servants that are representing them,” Tollette said.

TYPOS Crew leader Dakota Christian says engaging young professionals in the legislative process is important, especially with low voter turnout in recent elections.

“We're hoping that this engages more people to not be afraid to connect with their legislators and also not be afraid to run for office. It's kind of a scary task that I think a lot of people believe you have to be already really well established in your career to run but that's not always the case,” David Tollette, Executive Director, TYPROS.

Christian says the target age group to increase voter turnout is between 18 to 26.

The 'Day at the Capitol' event will be held on April 12th from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

TYPROS says it will continue holding events throughout the year to keep people engaged in the process of policy making.
