Sapulpa High School is being recognized for taking great care of its athletes. Their athletic trainer just won the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School award.
Dalton Wyrick has been the head athletic trainer at Sapulpa schools for two years and said it's great to be recognized for their focus on keeping athletes safe.
"We are making sure that athletes are taken care of before they even get to practice,” Wyrick said.
Getting to Safe Sports School status means athletic programs need to promote safe practices, have the right training equipment, and practice emergency plans.
Wyrick said he is honored to receive the recognition and wants people to know that athletic trainers have a big role in helping athletes stay healthy.
"We evaluate injures during games, we refer patients that need further treatment or further examination to a wide varity of clinicians,” Wyrick said.
Lee Wilson is a football and track coach at Sapulpa Public Schools and said Wyrick is great at what he does.
"I feel very confident that if we do have an injury, that I can text him or call him and he's on top of it and he'll take care of our kids any way we need him to," Wilson said.
Wyrick said the goal is to lead their athletics program to the highest safety standards for the players.
"I want to do athletic training the right way and just set a good example for those that come behind me the same way that I've had so many athletic trainers do the same for me,” Wyrick said.
To apply for this award, schools have to fill out a questionnaire about their best practices. Click here for more information.
