Gathering Place's Discovery Lab is gearing up for its big fundraiser on Saturday, the Mad Scientist Ball. There will be several experiments and activities.
One experiment shows you how to paint in a non-traditional way, using mathematics to create art.
It involves a double-hung pendulum, which is attached at the top so that it swings just right. The bottom tube attached is filled with paint.
Director of Education Chip Lindsey explained that with the help of gravity, physics, and math, it naturally creates a pattern.
"The thing about double-hung pendulums is that they swing in one direction at one rate of back and forth, and another direction in another rate of back and forth, and if you get halfway in-between, you get a combination of both those speeds," Lindsey said.
We even used the tool to decorate Lindsey's lab coat for the Mad Scientist Ball. Anyone can try it out at the event on Saturday night.
That includes a virtual reality experience, learning how to mix music and building something.
The event is a major fundraiser for Discovery Lab. It's a way for people to have fun and invest in a place that so often gives back to Tulsa.
"We invest heavily in the future of Tulsa and these children and their families that come here to learn about science and technology, engineering, art and math," Lindsey said.
