Broken Arrow police officers and high school leaders looked into two reports about someone with a gun on campus. The second threat caused a brief lockdown on Friday morning.

Police said they got to the campus within five minutes and had two students detained. Investigators said they were later released after no weapons were found.

School leaders said they first got a tip about a student with a gun around 9:30 on Friday morning. They said campus police determined there was no threat from the first report.

Just two hours later, Broken Arrow Police said they got a call from someone claiming to be a parent with concerns over someone on campus with a gun. This forced the high school into a lockdown for nearly an hour while police made their way into the building.

“Our officers were able to get into the school, find the two students and detain them and investigate this,” said Ethan Hutchinson, a public information officer for Broken Arrow Police.

Police said they released two students after talking to them and found no weapons anywhere on campus.

The district praised the quick action by everyone involved, and said it has a responsibility to treat any threat as legitimate at first.

“It’s also hard to tell if it’s being embellished,” said Tara Thompson, a spokesperson for the school district. “Is it something that people are trying to get out of school? It’s a fine line. It’s difficult to tell, so our response is always to treat it as a real threat.”

Word of the lockdown and potential threat was enough for some parents to take their kids out of school early.

“I worry about the worse,” said Shelly Sherry, a parent of a Broken Arrow high school student. “My son was worried about it, he wanted me to come pick him up so that’s why I’m here.”

The district said the student who made the initial report will face disciplinary action if they determine the report was an intentional hoax.
