An off-duty Tulsa firefighter put his life on the line when he ran into a burning building to save a man who couldn't get out.

A.J. Morrison was in gym clothes on his way to work out when he saw the fire and ran to it.

But he said what he did, was what any other Tulsa firefighter would have done.

Morrison said when he saw smoke coming from an apartment building, he didn't think twice about going to help, even though he wasn't on the clock.

"I really didn't have a thought, other than just go in, and see if I can help out in whatever way is needed," said Morrison.

Morrison forced his way into one of the apartments and saw a man inside who couldn't have made it out on his own.

"I noticed a door was cracked, so I went in there to see if anybody was in the building to clear it out if I could, and there ended up being somebody in there,” said Morrison.

He said it doesn't matter whether he's on duty or not, it's important to him to represent his department as best he can.

"I was just kind of thankful I was put there at the time that I was,” said Morrison. “I don't really consider myself, consider my actions anything out of the ordinary of anybody on the Tulsa Fire Department."

Morrison has no doubt any of the other firefighter would have done the same thing.

"Any one of these guys on this department would have done it,” said Morrison. “I truly believe that. God just put me there that day, at that time."

He said he's grateful for his training that helped him stay safe even without his protective bunker gear.

"We have a saying, 'you don't train until you get it right, you train until you can't get it wrong,’” said Morrison. “I truly believe I try to live by that."

Morrison is grateful he was able to help and this story has a happy ending.

"I'm very grateful that I am able to serve this community, because this is my community,” said Morrison. “I live a mile away, less than that. So just to be able to be put in that specific place at that specific time, just nothing but the Lord's timing."
