Carolina’s Jewelry and Repair has served the community for more than 20 years
Pedro Arroy Junior says his parents moved to Tulsa from Mexico to provide a better life for him and his sister and to chase their dreams of owning a jewelry shop.
"I can't even explain how happy he is whenever he's sitting there melting metal and making things that seem unnatural in a lot of ways,” Arroy said.
But that happiness was put on hold Tuesday after his family made a heartbreaking discovery. Someone broke into their store overnight and stole more than $350,000 worth of gold.
"They cut through, we have a cage back there made out of metal, they cut through that. They obviously cut through the wall to get to that and they cut through the safes,” Arroy said.
He says the burglars entered through the ceiling of the store next door and cut through the wall, a metal cage, and accessed the safe after cutting it open from behind.
"They knew what they were doing. They knew what they were looking for and once they had that determination, there was really not that much that could be done,” Arroy said.
Arroy says the safe didn't just have merchandise, but proof of his parent's hard work and was soon to be their retirement.
The store may have to scale back on sales going forward, but Arroy says that's okay because his father will be able to focus on repairs.
"My dads' ability to basically be able to fix any type of jewelry is the thing that has kept us afloat and is the thing that will keep us afloat right now as well,” Arroy said.
Arroy says the property was not insured because it was too expensive. Going forward, the family plans to have better security measures.
