Man Given 3-Year Prison Sentence For Axe Attack On Wagoner Police

A man from Muskogee is going to federal prison for nearly three years for attacking police with an axe.

Donald Laverty pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police say officers responded to a domestic dispute in Wagoner last year when Laverty refused to drop the axe and moved aggressively toward the officers, telling them to shoot him.

The officers retreated but once Laverty got to close, they did shoot him.

Documents say Laverty still fought with officers while being handcuffed, and threatened to kill them.
