Man With Hatchet Arrested Outside Wagoner Police Station

A man is in jail after Wagoner police said he ran towards officers with a hatchet in his hand on Monday.

A dispatcher said around 3:20 p.m., they noticed the man with the hatchet outside the police station.

The chief said he and two officers went outside to try to talk to him, but he wouldn’t listen. The chief said they were trying to deescalate the situation but he kept refusing to listen.

The man took his shirt and shoes off and began running towards the officers, the chief said.

The chief said they tried to stop him again by talking with him, but said they ended up having to tase him.

After the incident, the chief said they found one of their patrol vehicle's windows had been smashed by the suspect earlier.

The suspect was identified as Deandre Hughes by police. He was taken to hospital and then booked in the jail, police said.

“Officers did a great job getting the situation under control and being able to de-escalate to where no one was hurt or killed,” Wagoner Police Chief said.
