‘He Is Very Uplifting’: Family Remembers Oklahoma Marine Found Dead At North Carolina Gas Station

An Oklahoma man was among the three marines who were found dead this week at a North Carolina gas station.

"You couldn't help but smile whenever he is around," Genesis Dockery, Merax Dockery's sister, said.

Dockery was only 23 years old when he was found dead at a gas station in North Carolina. According to the Pender County Sheriff's Office, Dockery and two other marines were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Three young Marine Lance Corporals were found 29 miles southwest of Camp Lejeune. The men were motor vehicle operators with the Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, and 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

Merax's sister spoke Friday about the legacy he's leaving behind being a wonderful friend and a loving brother.

"He is very uplifting and cares about others. So much more than himself," Genesis said.

Genesis said Merax was the youngest of five siblings. He grew up near Seminole. She said she remembers Merax as an artist who loved to draw and taught himself how to play the guitar.

The U.S. Marines identified the two other men as 19-year-old Tanner Kaltenberg from Wisconsin and 23-year-old Ivan Garcia from Florida.

Merax's mother spoke with the Associated Press, saying she waited for her son at the airport Saturday evening, and he never arrived.

The ceremony will be held on the base of Camp Lejeune. His family wanted to go, so they created a GoFundMe to attend.
