The Rhema light display is a sight to see. It draws people from all over, which makes parking a little tough. The church wants visitors to remember their safety when going to see the display.
Folks at Rhema Bible Church had a new traffic light installed to give visitors a safer option to cross the street and visit campus. Instead of just flashing yellow, the light turns red when you press the walk button.
While traffic lights aren't the ones people go see at Rhema Bible Church, they're the ones Reverend Rob Betts said people should pay attention to.
"You want to make sure you exercise caution when you're crossing the street at any point," he said.
Each year, people jaywalk to get to the display. In the past two years, two kids were hit and injured by cars while crossing Kenosha.
Betts hopes this crosswalk makes people safer.
"We've got a crossing here where you can actually hit the light, and people can cross the street," he said.
But even that may not be enough. We pressed the button to cross the street, and even though the light was red, cars flew through.
"Just be aware that when you're coming up on this intersection, that people in front of you are probably going to be looking at the lights as they're driving by too, so we just encourage everyone to exercise caution," Betts said.
He said the safest option is to park on their side of the street. Rhema's campus has over 2000 parking spots for visitors.
"We're focused on, you know, I got to see the lights, I got to get to the concession, I got to get the hot cocoa, those kinds of things, and we're not paying full attention to our surroundings," Betts said.
Betts hopes folks use the lots on campus, but he's glad to have one more light on display, too.
An online map shows the different parking options if you want to plan ahead. The map can be found here.
