A small group of people in Tulsa have taken their protest over the war in Gaza to the home of a Tulsa representative who supports funding for Israel.
Some of the drivers on South Lewis Avenue got to sample a protest as they went past.
With a bullhorn amplifying their voices, a group against the occupation of Gaza protested here for a second day.
“As long as bombs are dropping in Gaza, the people of America are going to keep showing up for Palestinians,” said Julie Corrigan.
The location is intentional--outside the home of Tulsa Representative Kevin Hern, who, with his votes and positions, supports Israel.
The protestors weren’t entirely sure if Congressman Hern was home or not, but they knew he was not at his office. That's where they started, but after finding out he wasn't there, they ended up here.
“Even if we can't get Hern's attention or any of our officials, we have these passersby that are honking and seeing us,” said Emma Irving. “We have people seeing there are people who want to see a free Palestine in Oklahoma.”
The "Oklahomans Against Occupation" group believes the fighting in Gaza has gone too far - beyond what Israel could justify as self-defense or even as a response to the attack by Hamas.
“Once you reach 20,000 dead, it's no longer self-defense,” Corrigan said.
The group members got lots of honks of apparent support, but a few people yelled obscenities as they drove by.
The group believes plenty of Oklahomans support their position - even if the elected officials do not.
In a statement, Representative Hern responded, saying in part that his beliefs on Israel’s right to exist and defend themselves are unshakeable, and he will continue to support our ally Israel with his work in Congress.
