Four teens are in jail after police tried to stop a stolen vehicle that later crashed at Pine and Garnett
Officers say they found a rifle, body armor, and drugs on the teens, who officers say are known for car thefts.
Finding body armor and a rifle on a group of teens was alarming to police because they say it’s likely they were up to something more than driving a stolen vehicle.
Surveillance video shows the moments a police chase in Tulsa came to an end near Pine and Garnett, sending the stolen car tumbling.
Police tried to stop a red Kia after they say officers ran its plate and it came back stolen. Soon after, officers identified its four occupants, who were all under the age of 18 and were known by police for stealing cars.
After the crash, an officer quickly jumped out of their patrol car and chased one suspect who ran away.
“It took a little bit of time, and we were able to take that person in custody, and we got some in custody immediately when they rolled over,” Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg said.
Officers say two of the suspects went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police quickly flooded the area, grabbing the attention of employees inside a nearby credit union.
“You peered out the window, you saw everybody, and then I was like, ‘Oh, this is not normal. This is not normal,” witness Brody McKay, who was inside Diamond Credit Union, said .
McKay describes the scene as chaotic. He says the credit union immediately went into lockdown, and the whole event was the most excitement he’s seen at work.
“I got into finance for it to be a boring life,” he said.
Police recovered body armor, drugs, and a loaded AR-10 rifle, which was reported stolen in a different county.
“This is a pretty egregious crime out here where you've got four people in a stolen vehicle with a pretty substantial firearm wearing body armor,” Meulenberg said.
Police say their next step is to run the serial numbers on the body armor to find out where it came from.
Because the suspects are minors, officers say their identities will not be released.
