Saturday was an emotional day in Stillwater. On the 23rd anniversary of the plane crash that killed 10 members of the OSU basketball program in 2001, the Cowboys fought their way to a 70-66 win over West Virginia, their first conference win of the season.
“We won’t play a more important game, no matter how many more we play this year,” head coach Mike Boynton said in the postgame press conference. Boynton is now 6-1 in Remember the 10 games, and he makes it a point to stress the importance of this game to his teams. But he also has to balance not getting too caught up in the emotion.
The Pokes were led by three double-digit scorers in the four-point victory, but the key down the final stretch was free throw shooting and defense. The Pokes held the Mountaineers without a field goal in the final three minutes, and Brandon Garrison's clutch six made free throws sealed the victory.
After the game, Boynton talked about the emotion of winning in the Remember the 10 game, and picking up that first conference win. He also talked about the growth of this team, and carrying this momentum into Lawrence on Tuesday.
