Volunteers, along with members of the Tulsa Fire Department partnered with the Red Cross of Oklahoma, going door to door to install smoke alarms in Tulsa homes free of charge.
“It’s a pretty important deal, it's a nice way to give back to your community,” said volunteer Lindsey Jensen.
Those volunteers poured in to help sound the alarm on fire safety.
“All of these partners went out and pre-solicited families that may need free smoke alarms so they could sign up and expect us to come and provide this education today,” said Alice Townsend with the Red Cross of Oklahoma.
Along with the installations, they shared information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, and what to do if one starts.
“It's so important for homes to have not just a smoke alarm but a working smoke alarm," said Roy Zoellner with the Tulsa Fire Department.
He says smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years, but not everyone can afford to do that.
“Sometimes people might not have the financial means to purchase smoke alarms and they might not have the physical ability to get up and install a smoke alarm on the edge of the wall or ceiling,” he said.
That’s where they come in. Because hearing those three beeps could mean the difference between life or death.
And that’s why they’re working to make sure families have what they need to stay safe
