It's almost spring break for many kids across Green Country. One local therapist has a program that helps kids enjoy their spring break in a unique way.
The owners of Overcross Spring Break Camp said kids who participate will not only have fun, but also talk about their mental health and learn to work with horses.
Overcross Counseling and Equine Services has been hosting a spring break camp for the past three years. Organizers said the program has grown considerably since it started, with more than 70 kids participating in the first year alone.
The organization believes the community needs a fresh and innovative approach to mental health counseling. Kimberly Whayne, the owner and a licensed counselor, wants to offer a unique way to heal.
Whayne said camp is special because, to the kids, it's just a fun activity. But it also helps them confront the challenges in their lives.
“We work on social emotional development, STEM, reading, exercise, and horseback riding. We just try to give the kids in our community a safe place to spend their spring break and that way their parents know where they are. They’re around trusted adults, professionals, and they actually learn something they can use," Whayne said.
The spring break camp is March 18 through 22 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. They're still looking to fill spots and needing more volunteers.
