200 students from Tulsa Public Schools got to wear a white coat on Tuesday.

Hillcrest held a Youth Medical Summit at Tulsa Tech's Health Sciences Center.

The goal of the summit is to guide these students toward careers in healthcare.

You want the best care when you go to the doctor. But delivering that quality care to a patient takes hard work.

Jennifer Chesser is helping TPS students get a jumpstart by exposing them to the different opportunities available in the medical community.

"I have been in the practical nursing lab, which has a bunch of sim patients,” said Chesser. “All the things you would normally do with a patient, and students can come and listen to those and learn how to assess a patient and practice on them."

Cayzia Martin is one of the students picking up a stethoscope and learning about what's going on with "Mr. Smith," one of the sim patients. She says she's excited to have this hands-on experience.

"I was just like, wow, because there were so many little bodies just lined up, and I thought, oh, this is going to be fun because I like hands-on,” she said. “You can hear their heartbeats, you can hear their pulse, you can hear their breath sounds and their stomach and abdominal murmurs, all that good stuff."

Cayzia attended the summit because she wants to be an OBGYN when she grows up.

"Ever since I was little, I have always loved doctor-y stuff, the medical field; it always just drew me in. If I learn now and keep learning, I will be very successful," she said.

Jennifer says this type of excitement for learning and pursuing a career in healthcare is what it's all about.

"We are going to need that health care that has people invested and caring at the heart of it, and so getting that instilled in those kids now will better our future," Chesser said.
