Therapists want parents to be more aware of their children's social media activity as they prepare to go back to school.

Kids spend an average of more than 3 hours a day on social media.

Therapists say too much time on social media can have a big impact on mental health.

"There's so much content out there for us to absorb at a rapid rate, and our brains in those adolescent years are such sponges to that, and so we have to be mindful of what content our children are absorbing," therapist Kaydee Norton said.

The U.S. Senate passed the "Kids Online Safety Act” last week. It requires social media companies to do more to protect children online.
