The University of Oklahoma football team received mixed news on Tuesday.
On the positive side, OU secured a commitment from Omarion Robinson, the second-ranked safety in the 2025 class. However, the Sooners also suffered a significant setback as wide receiver Jayden Gibson will miss the entire season due to a knee injury.
News 9/News On 6 sports reporter Chris Williams reported from practice Tuesday that while Gibson's loss is a huge blow to the offense, the team is confident they have enough talent in the wide receiver room to support quarterback Jackson Arnold.
Deion Burks and Nic Anderson are expected to be the primary targets this season, but with Gibson out, J.J. Hester is emerging as a key player.
Hester, who is healthy and ready for a big season, has been praised for his speed, catch radius, toughness, and contributions on special teams. The coaching staff is excited about his potential impact, emphasizing the "next man up" mentality in response to Gibson's injury.
Hester commented on the situation, saying, "When one man goes down, the next is up. Our coach preaches that a lot, and we are all ready to step in if needed," Hester said.
He said he is excited about Arnold's ability to throw deep. "He could throw it deep, and we like to score from deep."
OU fans can look forward to seeing the deep ball in action all season, with the first game just over two weeks away.
