In a busy Owasso neighborhood, a crossing guard makes sure students make it to campus safely, and she does it with a smile.
We all know the morning rush. In the mix of the a.m. hustle, you can't miss Frances Clanin in her Minnie Mouse ears and bright-colored vest. And if you stop to talk to her, you can't miss her infectious spirit either.
Frances is in her 80s and became a crossing guard four years ago because she didn't like being retired.
“I worked all my life, and so when I retired, I thought holy cow, there ain't nothing to do,” she said.
Now she spends her mornings and afternoons waving at every person who passes by.
“You should see some of the expressions,” said Frances.
She treats every interaction as an opportunity to spread her positivity.
“Ain't nothing good going to happen if you are negative all the time,” she said. “If you are, you are not going to have a good life, you are not going to have a good car, you are not going to have whatever you want, but if you are positive and you know today is going to be a good day regardless of how you feel.”
And that joy for the job doesn't go unnoticed by the community she serves.
“It really touched my heart that other people really think about you or notice you, you know that you are really involved,” Frances said. “I guess I do start some people's day good, and that's a blessing for me, and I hope it is for them.”
Teaching us that a smile and a wave can brighten the busiest of mornings and a reminder to slow down.
“It's the simple things in life. It don't need to cost nothing.”
