This week is fall break for Green Country schools, but just because kids are not in the classroom does not mean the learning has to stop.
Discovery Lab is offering single-day camps with STEAM activities like Space Invaders, Nature Art, Digging Discovery, Metal Makers, and Mind Machines.
During Space Invaders, kids learn how rockets work.
"Rockets, of course, have fuel and they have an oxygen source on board and a little bit of spark and then it creates a controlled explosion that then propels the rocket in the opposite direction from where the gases come out," said Director of Education Chip Lindsey.
This is demonstrated in an experiment that uses alcohol, a five-gallon bottle, and a lighted match.
"It is a great way of understanding Newton's Laws of Motion," Lindsey continued saying, "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."
It can also be done using alcohol, a water bottle, and a barbecue lighter, but the outcome is a lot more explosive.
"We have been prototyping some smaller bottles and using the spark from a barbecue lighter to create an equal and opposite reaction when it all burns off and the bottle goes flying," said Lindsey.
This hands-on learning is fun but most of all it keeps kids engaged during their break from school.
"It is a compliment to school," said Lindsey. "It is something that kids can have a blast here, have real experiences with real stuff, and then at school all of a sudden it makes sense."
There are still some open spots for Discovery Lab's day camps on October 17 and 18. The camps are for children from Pre-K to 6th grade.
