As several restaurants were forced to close their doors due to the pandemic, local food vendors are now working together to keep their businesses moving forward.

U.S. Foods along with Homeland grocery stores figured out a way for people to grab groceries and a hot meal.

“We’re having to figure out ways like this to still be out and still serve meals, but do it in smaller, safer ways,” The Saucee Sicilian food truck co-owner Angie Mendez said.

The Saucee Sicilian and other food trucks set up shop in the parking lot of four Homeland stores across Oklahoma City.

It’s an effort to allow customers to get what they need without having to travel far.

“Get cooped up in the house, you need a place to get out and go and it’s one of the few places that we can go with everything shut down,” resident Jeff McNutt said.

Food trucks are also taking precautions by deep cleaning surface areas as well as asking customers to keep their distance while standing in line.

“Wiping down everything.  Everyone inside wears gloves. We use Clorox, we use Lysol. These are the two main products that are approved to kill the virus,” Mendez said.

With a number of food delivery outlets closed, U.S. Foods are opening their will-call for any food trucks who need to restock.

Mendez said it’s been tough for them with canceled or postponed events, so every opportunity helps.

“Every little bit makes a difference and it’s going to take all of us to keep together right now,” Mendez said.
