Lieutenant Colonel James Carl has lived in Catoosa for 30 years.
As a fighter pilot during World War II he flew 86 combat missions and his fighter group downed 701 enemy aircraft.
For his service, the mayor of Catoosa declared Monday, James Carl Day in Catoosa. Carl credits his success to his team but says he didn't make it through without a few close calls.
"When you lose your friends, that's when you really appreciate each other. We were blood brothers. If there ever was, we were," said Carl.
Carl was inducted into the French Legion of Honor in November for his contributions to the country's liberation.
