TU Preparing For Arkansas State After Close Game Against Texas

The University of Tulsa came within a touchdown of a colossal upset of Texas on Saturday.

Head Coach Philip Montgomery was quite clear from the beginning – there are no moral victories – but TU’s seven point loss to Texas last Saturday might just be as close as it gets to one.

The outcome wasn’t what they wanted, but the performance shows the type of team the Golden Hurricane could become.

“If we’ll continue on the path that we’re on, I think we have the potential of being an excellent football team,” said Montgomery.

The second half proved that on Saturday.  After going into the locker room down 21 to 0, TU outscored the Longhorns 21 to 7 in the second half.

“If you were in there and saw their faces, obviously hurt and disappointed, but hungry to get back and prove again who we are,” stated Montgomery.

“You can trust the guys beside you because you know they’re going to fight till the end, till the clock runs to zero,” said TU linebacker Zaven Collins.  “That’s all that counts, really, is the guy beside you, fighting.”

Now, TU must carry whatever momentum was gained into Saturday when they host Arkansas State, with former Sooner Justice Hansen at quarterback.

“I think we just ran out of time, and that’s really all that happened,” said Collins.  “You give us an overtime, we’re going to win the game, but moving on to next week, I think that’s all we should focus on.”

“I think our guys do have a positive spin,” said Montgomery.  “We’re right there and we can be a really good football team.  We have to take the next step.”
