As News On 6's Justin Shrair reported Wednesday, the community of Nowata is mourning the death of K-9 Officer Smokey, a CLEET certified drug detection dog.
He was killed Tuesday night when a woman let him out of a patrol unit. Smokey ran across a highway and was hit by a semi driver who couldn't stop in time. She could face a possible fine of $1,000 and up to five years in prison.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. at Stumpff's Funeral Home with burial to follow at Nowata Cemetery, the department announced on its Facebook page.
