Students and staff at Tulsa’s Emerson Elementary begin the school year in the state’s first public Montessori school.
The newly remodeled school building is the only public Montessori school in Oklahoma.
Pre-K through second grade students are taught using different methods and materials than in other schools. Instruction for third through sixth grades will incorporate some aspects of Montessori in addition to the Tulsa Public Schools curriculum.
“Some of the aspects are children learn at their own rate,” said Emerson Elementary Principal Diane Beckham. “There are specific materials that teach math concepts and language concepts and children are really in charge of their own education.”
