Jenks Students Disciplined For Walking Out During Class Time

About 65 students from Jenks Freshman Academy and High School received detention for leaving class without permission during the National School Walkout against gun violence Wednesday.

School spokesperson Rob Loeber said students were encouraged to protest before or after school or during their lunch hour. They were told if they left class without permission, they would be disciplined, he said.

"We absolutely support our students in expressing their first amendment rights, but we also have to follow our Board policy which is outlined in our student handbook," he said.

"The policy states that if a student leaves class without permission for any reason – walkout or otherwise – the student will be counted as truant and appropriate discipline will be applied."

About 65 of 3,500 students took part in the walkout, he said.
