A leaping elk caused a research helicopter to crash in the mountains of eastern Utah.
Authorities say the state-contracted Australian crew was attempting to capture the elk with a net and give it a tracking collar to research its movements.
As the helicopter flew about 10 feet above the ground, the elk jumped into the tail rotor causing the helicopter to crash. Two people were on board the helicopter, but were not seriously injured. However, wildlife officials say the elk died of its injuries.
