Construction of a new Mayes County highway bridge began this week.
State officials say the current Highway 20 bridge over Spavinaw Creek, built in 1947, is considered structurally deficient. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says the bridge will remain open during construction of the new structure.
ODOT says the $2.1-million project is expected to be complete by late this summer.
