The Golden Hurricane are coming off two last-second losses and sit at 1-3 for the season, but, they are about to get a fresh start as they host Navy to start conference play.
"Back to back weeks like that are difficult to get out of your mouth," said Head Coach Philip Montgomery.
It’s the first time since Montgomery’s first year on campus that the Golden Hurricane have lost back-to-back games.
These losses are especially tough, having lost the two games by a combined total of six points. Most recently was a last-second, 53-yard field goal to New Mexico.
"It's awful. Not only did we lose, we lost on the last play of the game with two or three seconds left two weeks in a row," linebacker Craig Suits said.
Montgomery said, "I don't think our guys are going to have any setback. They're hungry to get a win, and, again, I said this week and I'll say it again, I think we're close."
The “coach-speak” is the next game is always the most important game on the schedule, but this week for TU it's true - not only do they need a win after coming off two heartbreaking losses, it's the first conference game of the year, meaning, right now, everybody is 0-0.
"I'm excited about getting into conference and I know our guys are too, and, for us, you almost have to look at it like it's a new season," Montgomery said.
TU has never beaten Navy as a conference opponent.
They host them Saturday at 2:30 p.m. as they look for their first win over the Midshipmen since 2006.
"We're going to leave no doubt. We're not going to give them a chance to win the game on the last play of the game," Suits said.
