The group Wreaths for Fallen Heroes is now halfway to its goal of placing a wreath on every headstone at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery for Christmas.
There are 22,000 headstones at the cemetery, and donations allowed the group to purchase 8,000 wreaths which were delivered over the weekend. They have 4,000 in storage but still need another 10,000 to honor every veteran buried in the cemetery.
Charlotte Guinn is spearheading the effort in Ft. Gibson, and has even said she'd use her own money to make it happen.
"A wreath is just a small token to show Oklahoma pride for the sacrifices these fine men and women gave for all the freedoms we as American enjoy today," she said in a recent Facebook post.
The group can purchase the wreaths at half price from the group Christmas Honors which places wreaths at Fort Smith National Cemetery, but they need more donations to make it possible.
Anyone wanting to help can make a donation at any BancFirst in Oklahoma - just say your donation is for "Wreaths for Fallen Heroes."
