A man was hit by a train Sunday morning in Pryor. Authorities said it happened around 10:30 a.m. in the area of the 200 block of north Highway 69.

Assistant Police Chief James Willyard said a 53-year-old man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m.

Willard said the man made suicidal statements to officers when they arrived at the scene.

PPD said it has learned through its investigation that the man crawled up to the railroad tracks and laid on the tracks shortly before being hit by the train.

Willyard said they interviewed a witness that saw what happened.

"It does appear that the victim was on the tracks at the time of the incident. It doesn't appear that the railroad is at fault," the assistant chief said.

A medical helicopter and Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers also responded.

Resident Patric Bias said he lives near NW 3rd and Taylor where trains pass frequently, and Sunday morning he started hearing police cars and other emergency vehicles arriving at the scene.

"There are so many trains that come through Pryor, and kids play on the tracks all the time," he said.

Pryor Police sent out a news bulletin that the only railroad crossing that is open in the city is Southeast 9th Street.
