Possible Tornado Touches Down In Wagoner; Severe Storms Across NE OK

Strong storms moved across northeastern Oklahoma Thursday night knocking out power and causing some to take cover.

Tornado warnings were issued in the McAlester area and another in Wagoner County.

Storm tracker Darren Stephens reported power flashes and said the tornado potential on the east side of Highway 69 was high and sires were going off just before 11:00 p.m.

Stephens said debris was flying on the road and signs were being knocked down. And winds were more than 100 miles an hour.

Storm tracker Ron Morton was also in Wagoner when he came across a car upside down in a ditch. It's unknown how the car ended up in the ditch, but Morton said no one was in the car.

Just after 10:00 p.m., storm tracker J.D. McManus was in the Hanna area and reported down power lines across Highway 9.

In Tulsa County near Sapulpa, lightning caused a fire at one home. The Battalion Chief for Sapulpa Fire said two lightning strikes hit the roof of the home sparking the fire.

Muskogee also reported damage Thursday night. Dispatchers said the roof blew off Whispering Pines Apartments and that a building was destroyed at 11th and Talladega.

In Broken Arrow, an injury crash on Highway 51 between 177th East Avenue and the Kenosha Exit completely blocked the westbound lane.

It’s unknown at this time what caused the crash or the extent of the injuries of those involved.

Thousands were without power across the state due to the storm. PSO reported nearly 14,000 outages and OG&E reported upwards of 17,000-plus without power.

The storms also canceled several events in Tulsa.

The Bedlam baseball game between OU and OSU at ONEOK Field was canceled. A doubleheader was scheduled in Bricktown starting at 3:05 p.m.

The first day of Mayfest in downtown Tulsa was also cut short. The festival shut down just after 7:30 p.m. but officials said there was not severe damage.
