Winter Weather, Wind Chill Advisories In Effect For Eastern Oklahoma

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory and a Wind Chill Advisory for eastern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon.

Freezing drizzle fell over much of the area Saturday afternoon. The precipitation started affecting travel by about 2:30 p.m., with Tulsa Police and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to numerous crashes on Interstate 44 and the Inner Dispersal Loop in downtown Tulsa.

The drizzle switched over to snow at about dusk.

Multiple crashes forced the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to close the Will Rogers Turnpike east of Miami at about 2 p.m.

News On 6 also received reports of multiple crashes on Highway 412 between Tulsa and the Arkansas border.

Bridges are the most dangerous spots in situations like this. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said it sent 30 trucks out to treat highways in the area with sand and salt.

Once the precipitation ends, the biggest concern will be low wind chill temperatures, which will be below zero by Sunday morning. The National Weather Service expects wind chill temperatures as low as -12 degrees in eastern Oklahoma.
