The Tulsa Fire Department is investigating a fire that belongs to a former Tulsa police officer.

Around 2:00 Monday afternoon, firefighters were dispatched to a house fire near 135th East Avenue. According to the county assessor's website, the home belongs to former Tulsa Police Officer Shannon Kepler.

TFD Spokesman Stan May said the cause of the fire is unknown and that one of Kepler's dogs died in the fire.

Kepler, who was in court Monday afternoon at about the same time firefighters were dispatched, is the former cop currently involved in a murder trial for the 2014 shooting death of Jeremey Lake.

May said the fire started in the kitchen and that Kepler's home has extensive smoke and water damage. Firefighters couldn't access the fire through the garage.

The home is uninhabitable, May said.
