Broken Arrow Police announced a new effort Monday to improve pedestrian safety around schools.

"The Broken Arrow Community is experiencing an increase in collisions involving pedestrians.  Three of these involved children going to and from school," BAPD wrote in news release. "The Department is concerned for the safety of everyone, especially our children."

BAPD said it will continue to provide pedestrian safety information through the media and in cooperation with BA schools to the children in the classroom.

BAPD and BAPS are also increasing education and enforcement, the news release stated, with teachers and officers providing pedestrian safety information aimed at children.

"The Police Department has zero tolerance for motorists who do not yield to pedestrians in or near crosswalks," BAPD said. "Officers are issuing tickets to pedestrians who are crossing the street at other than designated crosswalks."

A ticket for either offense will cost $109, police said.

“We are asking the community’s help to spread the message about pedestrian safety.  Please talk to children about pedestrian safety, using the sidewalks, and always crossing the street at a designated crosswalk, “said BAPD Sgt. Keith Cook.  “We also ask that drivers pay special attention to operate their vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.  Together, we can ensure Broken Arrow remains a pedestrian friendly community.”
