Two police officers have been shot in western Pennsylvania, and police said the suspect has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting happened at about 4:30 a.m. CT Thursday in Canonsburg, 20 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.
Canonsburg Mayor Dave Rhome said two officers were shot. The CBS-affiliate, KDKA, reports one of the police officers died of his wounds.
"When it first started, one was bleeding badly. The shooter had everyone pinned down when they were trying to get him," a firefighter told KDKA.
Police have identified Michael Cwiklinski as the suspect in the shooting. He was at a home where officers responded to a domestic dispute.
“Upon their arrival, the two officers were ambushed. They were shot with an unknown type of firearm,” Trooper Melinda Bonderanka said.
One officer was taken to a hospital in Canonsburg and the other was flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh.
A neighbor said police are advising people to stay in their homes and away from windows. The Canon-McMillan School District is closed due to the ongoing situation.
Shortly after 10 a.m. CT, officials confirmed Cwiklinski was dead.
