A 9-month-old baby is in the hospital after police say a man broke into the family's apartment to hurt the child's mother.

Police say it started around 5:30 p.m. at the Meadows Apartments in the 2800 block of South 115th East Avenue.

Officers say four people arrived at the complex because of a dispute they were having over personal property with a woman who lives inside the apartment.

Police said when one man wasn’t allowed in, he went around back and broke through the back door.

Police said he then picked up a metal pipe and threw it at the woman, missing her and hitting her 9-month-old baby in the head.

The family took the baby to an Urgent Care clinic, but, because of the injuries, the baby was taken to St. Francis in critical condition from head trauma.

Police said the baby's dad was also hurt during the altercation - an ambulance took him to the hospital, but his condition unknown.

Sergeant Marcus Harper said, "It was determined that there was an infant and an adult inside this apartment. They were assaulted and the infant was taken to a non-emergency center and then transferred to St. Francis Hospital.”

Investigators said they do have a suspect and a suspect vehicle, but they are not releasing any of that information at this time.
